Building your next great thing with 10+ years of Ruby on Rails experience

With more than 10 years of experience in Ruby and Ruby on Rails, I have a track record of delivering high-quality solutions that meet both functional and design requirements. Throughout my career, I have collaborated closely with product managers and UI/UX designers to scope, design, and implement complex projects. I have also worked with both back end and front end technologies, including React with TypeScript. In addition, I have some experience with a variety of other programming languages, including Go, Elixir, C++, Haskell, Python, and Java, as well as developing my own toy programming languages and DSLs. As a passionate learner, I am always looking for opportunities to work with like-minded people and build the best software possible. During my PhD, I worked on the open-source project Bohrium, which allows for automatic parallelization of NumPy and Ruby code written in C++. Additionally, my implementation of a CSP framework for Ruby benchmarked better than the Python implementation at the time. I am comfortable working remotely and believe that effective communication is key to successful collaboration. When I am not at my computer, I enjoy geocaching, playing board games, and cooking. Jokingly, I have made stickers for my own jam brand. I am committed to becoming the best version of myself and would welcome the opportunity to bring my skills and enthusiasm to your team.

Hi! I'm Liz 👋🏼 I'm about as full-stack 🥞 as they come. I started as a QA and automation engineer and now I'm a senior full-stack engineer focusing on Rails and React. Early on as a QA I worked on projects from writing SQL scripts to check data, to automation engineering, to React Native applications, and even helping implement Kafka instances and a team transition to Kubernetes. Then I moved on to development, mostly focusing on Rails / React stacks. I also am very comfortable working in Python. Now I've been a full stack developer for a few years, always carrying my QA mindset with me. I love exploring the ins and outs of a problem, and figuring out where I can pick it apart and expose weaknesses. I'm really great at building relationships with stakeholders, establishing trust and cooperation so that we can all move forward with a project in a very pragmatic way. Pairing with coworkers is always very enjoyable for me. I like the collaboration, but I really value the mentorship the most. Teaching juniors git has become a mainstay for me, as well as coaching them to maintain a calm mindset while debugging, encouraging them to move through issues in a systematic way. And of course I always fit in robust testing, showing folks how to create test suites and pipeline automation that will improve their workflow. Let's talk about how I can contribute to your team and stack 🙌🏻

I've been programming since I was a young teen, earned two bachelors degrees from MIT (Computer Science, Electrical Engineering), and I bring an A+ game when it comes to crafting software. My training and broad experience enables me to steer architectural and software design choices. I take pride in mentoring junior- and mid-level developers. I present solid, but flexible, opinions when collaborating with other engineers, and I cultivate those opinions through continuing education and broad experience. Some highlights: • Recruited and led the development team that turned around the National 4-H web application, from a struggling and seldom-used administration tool to a full-featured app used in 25 states at the state, county, club, and member level. • Created a custom product-description language and accompanying web application that allowed a client to create new workflow-based products. The client increased their product offerings by 10x and their volume-per-staff by nearly 10x. • Developed two new web applications for a Colorado municipality to offer fiber internet to their residents. The web applications were used by thousands of customers to sign up, schedule installation, and pay for service, and by the installers in the field to activate new commercial and residential installations. The web applications had to integrate multiple third-party systems and custom databases in a set of robust, fault-tolerant, and transactional processes. • Engineered and developed the noise analysis tool used to validate the integer processing unit (IPU) of Intel's Pentium 4 processor. • Filled a wide spectrum of roles on many large projects, from single engineer, building and launching greenfield web applications, to project team leader managing multi-engineer projects. • Mentored junior- and mid-level developers, helping them earn promotions. Mentored teams by steering team culture through regular show-and-tell sessions and a technical book club.
