Hi there, I discovered Rails before it was mainstream and have been in love with it ever since. I've now been doing Rails development for over 20 years and worked in many industries including banking, health care, parks and recreation, travel and real estate among others.

I've run my 1-person agency since 2006. Through my agency, I've engaged with many companies as engineering staff augmentation, helping teams ship features, clean up tech debt, train juniors, etc. I've worked with both product companies as well as agencies. When I'm not working with a client, I love bootstrapping my own projects. This year (2024) I've spent some time on "small bets", for which I've solo launched 3 completely to market. I'm hoping to complete a 4th before year end. At the end of 2023, I completed a 7 year near-full-time contract for a company in the HIPAA / digital health space, for which I was the original developer for their product. This product went on to earn millions of dollars in profit. Along with being the original developer, I helped train and onboard the rest of their engineering team in the best practices of Ruby, web, backend, etc. I'm incredibly active in the Ruby community, and you'd often find me working on one of my passion projects or assisting newcomers and other developers in the Ruby ecosystem. My skills don't stop just at Rails - I'm proficient in many other technologies and am capable of learning new ones. I aim to please and enjoy delivering on high expectations. I can be often found working on home improvements or in the kitchen (I love baking bread!).

Multiple careers - started development in 2004 - and by 2005 I was on Rails. Ruby/Rails has been my goto tech since then. M.Sc. degree(s) in multiple tech domains. Over the years, I've had my own business ventures, led tech teams, mentored young-lings and peers, delved in ML and AI and still curious to this day. I'm passionate about AI and the new-wave of AI-capable solutions. I'm creating my first few RAG solutions. I can delve deep and talk business at the same time.

As an experienced small team developer, I bring drive, grit and proficiency in Rails, Hotwire, Stimulus, View Components, and Tailwind/Bootstrap. I've got experience refactoring critical app flows, improving CI/CD using Github Actions, as well as experience with deployment and scaling setups with cloud providers like Google Cloud and AWS. Notable achievements include implementing architectural changes that slashed error rates by ~63%, spearheading the development of a comprehensive test suite for a new app achieving ~92% coverage and improving poor page rendering times by ~70% through careful profiling and targeted changes. I've been trusted to lead refactorings of key application internals, and been involved a few application architecture improvement projects at the startups I've been at. Beyond the technical aspects of the job, I actively engage in community-building initiatives, including organizing Toronto Ruby's monthly meetups and contributing to The Odin Project and Ruby for Good projects. This involvement underscores my commitment to continual growth and skill enhancement. Outside of the tech realm, I find joy in analog photography, cherishing the creative freedom it affords. I am eager to apply my diverse skill set to creating cultures of collaboration and to contribute to organizational and personal success.

I am a huge fan of Rails, and have over 18 years experience using it. I appreciate clean, easy to read and easy to understand code. I have worked on many different projects from Rails 1-7, in every stage of development from greenfield to startup to legacy projects. I am a big fan of the recent Hotwire additions to Rails, and have worked on a number of projects using Turbo and StimulusJS. I am a full stack developer, but prefer to follow Rails standards and keep Javascript code minimal to maximize productivity. I am a strong problem solver and excel at designing systems and solving bugs. I really like to collaborate and create the best product possible.

Programming professionally for 20 years. I've spent the last 4.5 years as Backend Lead at Pexels, and previously held lead roles at HYP3R and TalentNest. Primarily interested in backend Team Lead or Engineering Lead positions. Looking for a fully remote role. I began as a self-taught programmer as a preteen, and worked as a freelance developer through high school and university. In this capacity at a small company, I have a wide variety of responsibilities, including: Architect, plan, implement, test and ship large complex features and build out process Help non-engineers plan, scope and estimate their projects and participate in organization-wide product planning Triage and respond to security issues in code and infrastructure, including running a bug bounty program Manage and mentor a team of backend engineers of all levels.
