It’s a small but meaningful contribution toward digital transformation in a context where it's needed most. Whether it’s launching PartsToGo, a growing car parts marketplace in Zimbabwe, or conceptualizing platforms like TendersZimbabwe, I love taking on the kind of challenges where impact matters more than hype. After bootstrapping and exiting a successful Rails SaaS as both principal engineer and CTO, I decided to focus back on my passion for engineering and architecture. I joined a remote-only startup building a new product with the goal of using the traditional Rails paradigms along with tried and tested technology to quickly get a comprehensive product to market. That "keep it simple" approach got the product into the hands of some of the most recognizable brands in the world. Feature development turned into performance and growth engineering, again, using the same mentality of finding the simplest most effective approach. I am an excellent generalist with experience in most traditional Rails stacks from backend to frontend and able to easily adapt to new technologies (but only where warranted!) I enjoy the challenge of a fast paced startup world of executing on ideas and providing solutions for customers problems with quick deployment and iterative improvements.

Hi there, I discovered Rails before it was mainstream and have been in love with it ever since. I've now been doing Rails development for over 20 years and worked in many industries including banking, health care, parks and recreation, travel and real estate among others.

I've run my 1-person agency since 2006. Through my agency, I've engaged with many companies as engineering staff augmentation, helping teams ship features, clean up tech debt, train juniors, etc. I've worked with both product companies as well as agencies. When I'm not working with a client, I love bootstrapping my own projects. This year (2024) I've spent some time on "small bets", for which I've solo launched 3 completely to market. I'm hoping to complete a 4th before year end. At the end of 2023, I completed a 7 year near-full-time contract for a company in the HIPAA / digital health space, for which I was the original developer for their product. This product went on to earn millions of dollars in profit. Along with being the original developer, I helped train and onboard the rest of their engineering team in the best practices of Ruby, web, backend, etc. I'm incredibly active in the Ruby community, and you'd often find me working on one of my passion projects or assisting newcomers and other developers in the Ruby ecosystem. My skills don't stop just at Rails - I'm proficient in many other technologies and am capable of learning new ones. I aim to please and enjoy delivering on high expectations. I can be often found working on home improvements or in the kitchen (I love baking bread!).

I work mostly with Ruby on Rails, React and Postgres, and I’ve handled everything from backend to deployment to analytics. I am a huge fan of Rails, and have over 18 years experience using it. I appreciate clean, easy to read and easy to understand code. I have worked on many different projects from Rails 1-7, in every stage of development from greenfield to startup to legacy projects. I am a big fan of the recent Hotwire additions to Rails, and have worked on a number of projects using Turbo and StimulusJS. I am a full stack developer, but prefer to follow Rails standards and keep Javascript code minimal to maximize productivity.
