Senior software engineer with over a decade of experience with both Rails development and full-stack work
I got my start volunteering with an open source Rails project called the Archive of Our Own (ao3.org) back in 2008 when it was just getting off the ground. I ended up working as a committee chair, lead developer, and paid contractor over the years and built a lot of the core functionality while scaling the site up to 5.4 million registered users and over 500 million page views per week. We won a Hugo Award in 2019 and the site is now the 56th most visited website in the United States. I'm really proud of what we've been able to accomplish over the years, working with a team of (mostly female) volunteers, many of whom were just getting started as developers, and how much I also learned along the way. In the intervening years, I've also worked at another non-profit (KaBOOM!) and startups in the HR and e-commerce space (Jibe and Rosie). I have a lot of experience upgrading, maintaining, and scaling Rails apps, developing new features, creating internal APIs, building third-party integrations, and working to improve code quality and performance. I enjoy working with junior developers and helping them grow in their careers, and I'm always on the look-out for new challenges and fun problems to solve.

My name is Simon and I have 12 years of experience building successful products and teams for US, Israeli and Russian companies. I am equally passionate about technology and people management. A developer with a unique perspective on how code can be used as a tool for business, with a passion for the intersection of psychology and technology.
I ride bikes, write code and read psychology books. As a passionate developer with a background in software engineering and economics, I have a unique perspective on how code can be used as a tool for business. My education began at Massey University in New Zealand, where I studied software engineering and economics. I then completed the Enspiral Dev Academy Code Bootcamp, which solidified my skills as a developer. I have experience working for an agency, where I contributed to a large project for the founder of Xero, Rod Drury, using technologies such as Hotwire and Turbo. Additionally, I am currently a co-founder in a startup called FruitMinder, where we are using Rails as the backend for a TypeScript React Native frontend with a GraphQL API in between. Not only am I passionate about the code itself, but I am also interested in how psychology plays a role in the products we build. I believe in using "psychology for good" in the design and development process. Currently available for 2 days of work a week.
